The Fast Layne: The Entertainers
Donny Layne was standing in the middle of The Entertainers. As he was going through this routine introduction, Alfie upstaged him by acting the goat and miming every single word off the autocue: "Donny Lane here with The Entertainers, the number one contenders to The House's tag team titles next weekend. How are you feeling?"
Darren Best, considered to be the straight man, took the microphone from Layne: "Get out of here."
"Sorry?"
A gleeful Alfie tapped him on the shoulder and pointed towards his left: "There's the door, pal. 'op it."
Layne did as he was told, as Alfie steered him in the direction of the exit with a playful kick to the backside.
Darren, ultra-serious, told the camera crew: "We'll start again. From the top...three, two one...and action! I'm Darren Best - no relation - and the host with the most. I can do it all; jingle, jangle, wrestle, present and tangle and I'm one half of The Entertainers, your new tag team champions. My guest at this time - my other half, my brother from another mother and the other tag team specialist in this organization - Alfie Button."
Gesturing with his thumb to the departed Donny, who was still watching in the shadows: "Dazza, 'ow come we got lumbered wiv 'im again? Honestly, why can't we get Dawn? Reckon it's because she fancies the arse off me?"
Best contemplated it, and tactfully agreed: "It could be. Alfie, all week we've been getting tweets. They all wanna know: How are we going to beat The House?"
The Brit scoffed at that suggestion: "Whatever way we see fit, and whenever we choose. 'ow about that, ya mugs?!"
DB turned towards the camera: "Come in closer."
They did as he asked: "Right now, you're looking at the two BEST...yes, that's my surname and along with my partner, we are the two BEST young wrestlers in this company. We didn't get here by luck. We took The Freak Show's undefeated streak and then went through three teams like a knife through butter. We're here on....
Alfie interrupted: "...on Chad Merrit. We told ya The Freak Show 'ad the right name and we took their virginity. In the Sin City, we were called the underdogs, but we're smarter, faster, younger and sexier than any ovver up-and-coming couple, including Taylor Swift and Calvin, in entertainment today..."
Bringing Darren in from the dark and with immaculate timing: "That's why we're THE ENTERTAINERS," they chanted in unison.
Back to Best: "We're gonna win by me being me and Alfie being Alfie. How can we beat The House? How can we not? Sure, they're big and strong, but every other attribute you need to be successful, we've got...in abundance," he concluded before handing the microphone over to Alfie outright.
"You are looking at the men 'oo put the entertain in sports entertainment and we're the 'ere, now and next ten, fifteen, twenty years of this business," he said pointing towards themselves.
"We're the dog's bollocks and Stevie Wonder in a blackout could see our potential. 'ow are we gonna beat The 'Ouse? Don't make me laugh. We're gonna blow the 'Ouse down and away, and tear the 'ouse down doing it, my muckers," the chirpy Cockney bragged cockily.
"Me and Dazza are just startin' to rock the Brad Pitt out of this joint and we're only gonna get better. Forget Xperience, that's what we got out of that - experience. We told you then...go on Dazza," Button halted, giving his partner the chance to take centre stage once again.
"We told you we'd be at the next Wrestlecade, reigning or challenging, for the tag team titles. Well, we're ahead of ourselves, and how can you call us anything other than favorites when we've gone through four teams to get here and..." Best paused allowing Alfie to finish the next part off. They were working together extremely well here. Can they do that this time next weekend?
"...We've been 'ere five minutes, but we ain't gonna disappear after fifteen minutes of fame. Nah. Not only are we champions elect, but we cost Roebuck the World title. Yeah, the two little upstarts we keep getting called are 'avin a say in major titles in jOlt and we're only gonna get better."
Again, singing off the same hymn sheet, they bragged in beautiful harmony: "The best are gonna get better."
The Entertainers headed out, Button insulting Layne in the process, and at least appeared to be ready.
Last time they faced The House, they clearly weren't. Having said that, they'd shouted their mouths off to get an opportunity to oppose The House. On this occasion, rightly or wrongly, they'd earned it.
Was it time for Darren and Alfie to show they were indeed the BEST and push the BUTTON on The House's time as tag team kingpins?
