Open Season / Closed Minded

In just days time, six men would be battling it out for the right to challenge Ninja K for one of the most prestigious championships in wrestling today – jOlt’s Underground Championship. A “who’s who” of jOlt grapplers had battled in what many considered to be among wrestling’s most dangerous hardcore divisions anywhere.

Longtime wrestling veteran Tyke would look for his first major jOlt title. “The Big Bucks” Adam Roebuck would look to move out of tag team wrestling and sink his teeth into The Underground. Waymoth Turnbull sought to continue the domination started by his employer and current jOlt and Relentless Champion Aran Thompson. The Strangler was out to make the Thomas family proud by getting one step closer to the title. “Midas” Mack Brody – currently one-third of the jOlt Tag Champions – was on the hunt for more gold to bring to The Heirs of Wrestling camp.

And this next guy was also going for his first big championship because the Underground was quote, “really totes awesome and looked like fun!” And also, he was seeking to make former Underground Champion and jOlt Champion Derecho proud.

No, seriously.

This man was “The Nicest Guy in Wrestling” Kayden Paulton.

“Hey, guys and gals!”

The sickeningly-but-genuine friendly voice of Kayden penetrated the ears of jOlt’s fanbase. He was in the locker room with a few words to say about the Open Season match.

“What a crazy couple of weeks it’s been, huh?” He asked rhetorically. He wasn’t known for always being bright, but he did realize he was talking to a camera and nobody else. “When I first started this trip a month or two ago, I was… well, I got kicked around a lot. And that wasn’t cool. Then Derecho died for about a week or so and that really wasn’t cool. Pardon my French, but what a bummer.”

jOlt’s Friendly Neighborhood Grappler sighed.

“So I dedicated my career to our fallen friend and former Underground Champion, Derecho, proud and before you know it, I put a notch in the loss column of Waymoth Turnbull and a notch in MY win column! It was awesome! Sure, he put a notch on my head after the match, but it was still fun! Then I won a bunch more matches! I beat Bane Loneheart, I beat Sepiroth Du Luc, I beat Mattock and even Mike Extreme! Those were all some awesome contests! I get chosen for the Open Season match because I did real good in all those other matches and that was pretty cool!”

Paulton smiled to himself before pressing on.

“And now, I’ve got this chance to make Derecho proud and get the chance to wrestle that awesome cool guy, Ninja K and his twenty-thousand signature moves! But all I gotta do first is win this Open Season match! Now some people may question me because I don’t wanna pick up weapons… that’s kinda mean and that stuff’s not for me, personally, but I don’t judge! Why would I want to be in the Underground? Well, because titles are cool! And I decided that I want to set myself a goal and win my first title in jOlt!”

“This doesn’t mean that I won’t take risks. I will fly to sweet heights, jump off cages and fly through the air like a really kick-butt bald eagle soaring in the wind. I will do all these things because the awesome jOlt fans love that stuff and that’s who I do this for! At Cataclysm, these other cool guys want to win the title and it’s too bad we all can’t share that contract six ways. But I promise when I win the Open Season match and beat Ninja K for the Underground Championship, TITLE SHOTS ALL AROUND!”

The Good Guy stood up from his seat in the locker room and looked proud of himself.

“Derecho, I’m going to win this match for you, my deceased friend. The fallen King. With your blessing, we can do this, my friend! We can do this!”

Paulton smiled proudly before leaving the room…

…And yes, the poor guy was blissfully unaware of the whole “Derecho’s not really gone, he was discredited by his hated rival Aran Thompson” thing.

But one thing at a time, huh?
